Route 1: Bandar Abbas Sea Route (via the Persian Gulf)

Cargo moves from Bandar Abbas by sea, connecting into onward routes toward Russia and the Caspian region. This is typically the most cost-effective option for bulk and containerized cargo, though transit times run longer than overland options.

Typical transit time: around 18–25 days door-to-door, including inland customs clearance on the Russian side. Cost: generally the lowest per-container cost of the three routes — the trade-off is against speed rather than price.

Route 2: Poti Port — The Black Sea Gateway via Georgia

Georgia’s Poti Sea Port is a key link for cargo moving between Iran and destinations across the Black Sea and onward into Russia and Europe. Overland transport from Iran into Georgia connects to Poti, from which sea routes continue toward Russian Black Sea ports and beyond.

Typical transit time: around 10–14 days total — roughly 5–7 days for the overland Iran-to-Georgia leg by truck, plus 2–4 days by sea from Poti to Russian Black Sea ports. Cost: mid-range — more than the Bandar Abbas sea route, but faster for cargo bound for Russia’s Black Sea coast or onward into Europe.

Route 3: North-South Corridor (Rail and Road via Azerbaijan)

TThe International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) links Iran to Russia via rail and road through Azerbaijan, offering a faster alternative to sea routes for time-sensitive cargo. Ongoing infrastructure projects, including the Rasht-Astara rail link, are expected to shorten transit times further as they come online.

Typical transit time: around 10–15 days, the fastest of the three options — and set to shorten further once the Rasht-Astara rail link is completed. Cost: carries a premium over the sea routes, reflecting the speed advantage.
